 The Arab American Association of Engineers, Architects and ITs; AAAEA general assembly held in February 06, 2016 its 5th biennial meeting and elected 2016 - 2017 AAAEA Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

AAAEA Boards voted to accept members to its both Boards from areas outside the Tri-State if they meet criteria established in the bylaws and get approval of the Executive Committee.  AAAEA Board affirmed that this action does not violate its current bylaws. 

On the Election Day, the elected President Mr. Dr. Suhail Albhaisi stated in his victory welcoming remarks: “The elected AAAEA team will continue building on the accomplishments of the previous leaderships which commenced since the inception of the AAAEA in 2006.” Dr. Suhail Albhaisi continued: “The AAAEA Executive Board and the Board of Trustees, with the support of the general assembly, the community and its leaders, will continue helping all AAAEA members through job creation, networking, training, workshops and connecting with professionals in the engineering and architectural industry.”

The Tri-State Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects is a professional organization registered in the states of NJ, NY and CT and was approved as a tax exempt Association by IRS in the year 2013 and is dedicated to helping its members succeed in their professions by networking, social activities, continuing education seminars and workshops, and student financial scholarships. AAAEA is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all architects, engineers and computer science professionals and students of Arab heritage. 

The association vision is to support the Arab American professionals and community growth through assisting young Arab American professionals and college students to progress in their careers regardless of their origin or religion, promoting our professionals and businesses through networking locally and domestically, encouraging job referrals and search, endorsing professional certification through an educational and training seminar series, and expanding our scholarship program to help our young professionals evolve. We believe this program is the only one of its kind for engineering, architecture and computer science students of Arabic origin. Support the National Brand of the Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects and establish a regional collaborative with other entities to enhance services to our members and businesses.

9th Annual Scholarship Gala Press Release

More than 300 professionals convened for the 9th annual Tri-State Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects (AAAEA) Scholarship dinner gala on November 15, 2015. at the Staten Island's Hilton Garden Inn. The gathering brought together a diverse range ofleading industry professionals and representatives from prominent engineering firms. 

The event was hosted by ART -TV news anchor Rita Zihenni. The event featured the well-known comedian and Sirius XM radio host Dean Obeidallah. The events central theme, "Building Bridges & Making a Difference", recognized the profound contributions of past and present Arab Americans to the engineering, architect and information technology professions in the United States. The auspicious occasion further highlighted AAAEA's Tri-State's Association commitment to the democratic principles of citizenship by supporting higher education through awarding several scholarships to local college and university students and internship opportunities. The awards segment was followed by live Middle Eastern folkloric entertainment (Debka) and a stand-up comedy performance that delivered a powerfully funny message directed at dismantling the negative Arab American stereotypes. The gala ceremonies began with a welcome message from the Association President Mr. Maher Abdel-qader, Project Manager for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). 

This year's keynote speakers were Mr. Wallace Caban, P.E., Chief of Construction Management of the Division for the Port Authority of NY & NJ Engineering; Dr. Feniosky Pena-Mora, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Design & Construction; and Mr. Steven Santoro, Assistant Executive Director of NJ Transit Capital Planning & Programs. Six scholarships were awarded to students majoring in engineering and architecture related fields in recognition of their academic excellence. 

8th Annual Press Release

More than 300 professionals attended the Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects (AAAEA) Tri-State 8th annual dinner scholarship gala on November 9, 2014 bringing together a diverse range of industry leaders and engineering firms in Staten Island’s Hilton Garden Inn. The event was emceed by on-air personality and correspondent for Russian-Arabic TV Reema Abu Hamdieh featuring Arab American stand-up comedian and writer Amer Zahr. The event’s central theme, “Building Bridges, while making a Difference”, honored a number of individuals, including student scholarship recipients, and a community achievement award. The awards segment was preceded by live Middle Eastern folkloric entertainment and an interactive comedy performance. This year’s keynote speakers introduced by Maher Abdel-qader, President and Co-founder of AAAEA Tri-State, were Eric C. Macfarlane, P.E., Deputy Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design; Michael A. Shamma, P.E., Chief Engineer of the NYS Thruway Authority, Stephanie E. Dawson, Acting Chief Operating Officer, Port Authority of NY & NJ.; and Raymond A. Ribeiro, P.E., Executive Vice President for the NYC Housing Authority. The community achievement award was presented to Fatma Abboud for her commitment and dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities and her overall efforts on the betterment of the community. Three scholarships were awarded to students majoring in engineering and architecture related fields in recognition of academic excellence.

1. Michael A. Shamma, PE, President at HAKS Engineers, Architects, & Land Surveyors, P.C. and Ex Chief Engineer for New York State Through Way. Responsible for planning, directing and evaluating the operations ofHAKS. He has more than 27 years of experience in the fields of civil engineering and transportation. Prior to joining HAKS, Mr. Shamma was the Chief Engineer for the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) where he led and directed the Engineering Department efforts to ensure development and delivery of a $1.5 billion multi-year capital program. Previously, in his 24-year career at the New York State Department of Transportation, Mr. Shamma was Region 2 Director. Mr. Shamma is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York. 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Dr. Faris A. Malhas, PhD, PE, Dean of School of Engineering, Science and Technology at CCSU,(Central Connecticut State University). Dr. Malhas has been in academia for more than 28 years. He is a licensed professional engineer in Florida. He is the coauthor of a bestselling textbook on the design of steel structures. Dr Malhas has also been the co-editor for four ACI Special Publication books in various fields of structural concrete. Dr Malhas received a B.S.E and an M.S.E in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds an M.Sc. in Engineering Mechanics and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Dr. Ibrahim S. Odeh, PhD, MBA Director of Global Leaders in Construction Management - Research Group for the Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University. Dr. Odeh also teaches courses in the area of construction engineering and management (CEM) where he also direct the CEM program at the department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics for both the on-campus and on-line tracks.

Dr. Odeh received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Management from University of Illinois at Urba­na-Champaign. He also holds an MBA degree with an emphasis on Finance from University of Minnesota.

 

 

 

 

4. Dr. Walid S. Najjar, PhD, PE, Vice President and Quality Manager, WSP. of Transportation and Infrastructure Group working on highway and railway bridge projects. Dr. Najjar has 33 years of professional experiences, including the past 20 years with WSP. Previously, Dr. Najjar worked at Northeastern University as a faculty of civil engineering and at Cornell University as a visiting faculty and post-doctoral associate in civil engineering. He graduated from Cornell University in 1987 with a doctoral degree in civil/structural engineering and previously from Oklahoma State University in 1981 with bachelor and master degrees in civil engineering.
